Wyze is being sued in a class action lawsuit due to their recent security breach which exposed the data of 2.4 million users. Matthew Schoolfield, the suit’s Plaintiff, used information from Twelve Security, the cybersecurity firm that originally discovered and disclosed the breach, to sue for:
- Negligence
- Invasion of privacy
- Breach of implied contract
- Unjust enrichment.
Schoolfield is seeking damages in the form of “injunctive and declaratory relief”. He claims that he is still concerned about the Wyze Cam’s security, fearing unauthorized access, and says he has spent time “addressing these safety concerns”. The suit is for over $5 million and applies to millions of users across the United States.
The demand for jury trial document from the Western district of Washington reads,
“Not only does the exposed data make Wyze customers more susceptible to identity theft and financial fraud in the future, it is now possible for any individual anywhere in the world to access the live video feeds of every single Wyze camera that was online.”
Schoolfield claims that Wyze did not follow Federal Trade Commission guidelines for “reasonable data security practices”, exposing information that included user’s usernames and emails, lists of all their cameras, and biometrics like height, weight, daily protein intake and more. Information that remained protected included the users’ passwords, video storage and financial information.
In response to the breach, Wyze pushed out a token refresh that required users to reboot their integrations with Alexa, Google Assistant and IFTTT. They also recommended that users change their passwords and enable two-factor authentication.
Wyze is known for their affordable smart smart home devices including the Wyze Cam, Wyze Cam Pan, Wyze Sense security sensors, Wyze Plug and Wyze Bulb. All of these devices are connected to the Internet, known as Internet of Things or IoT devices. Many other manufacturers of IOT products have run into cybersecurity issues like Nest and Ring, owned by Google and Amazon, respectively.
