The United States Health and Human Services Department was cyber attacked. Information dealing with the coronavirus outbreak was tampered with. Although it’s unclear who the attacker was, the United States’ administration suspects it was a foreign actor, according to a report from Bloomberg News. A spokesperson for the National Security Council, John Ullyot, released a statement saying,
“We are aware of a cyber incident related to the Health and Human Services computer networks, and the federal government is investigating this incident thoroughly…HHS and federal government cybersecurity professionals are continuously monitoring and taking appropriate actions to secure our federal networks.”
Currently, the network is working normally, Ullyot continued. Under the attack, the Health and Human Services Departments’ servers were overloaded in order to slow their systems down, which was unsuccessful. However, many Americans received “fake” text messages about a national quarantine, which the National Security Council denied on Twitter. As of now, officials believe that the attack didn’t take any data from their systems.
Coronavirus and the Smart Speaker Market
Given that coronavirus originated from China, which manufacturers many smart speakers, production may be slowed, according to a recent article. A manufacturer of Wemo and Belkin smart products called Foxconn Technology Group has halted production in China, following the directions of the federal and local Chinese governments.
A statement from Foxconn said, “We are also working with the local governments to facilitate the necessary preparations for our employees to safely return to work. The operation schedules for our facilities in China follow the recommendations of the local governments, and we have not received any requests from our customers on the need to resume production earlier.”
Along with smart speakers, Foxconn produces parts for Apple’s supply chain including the iPhone, Macs and iPads. They also work with popular technology brands such as Nokia, which makes Androids, SHARP, which makes everything from TVs to cell phones, Linksys, which makes Wi-Fi routers, and PHYN, which makes water and leak monitors, among other smart home products.
